Basic Programming Tips: 'Pitch Shifting'

Introduction

The pitch shifter is a processor that does exactly what it says. It can give you humorous "Alvin and the Chipmunks" effects, or it can be a valuable tool to correct and improve your project.

Enhancement

If your signal is essentially OK, but you want to make it more interesting, you can add a secondvoice with a slight pitch change, usually nothing more than a few cents (see definitions below). This would serve to thicken or double the original sound.

Correction

If your signal is unacceptable as it is (out of tune, inconsistent pitch) and must be replaced, you can pitch shift the bad sections and replace them, thereby compiling a correct signal. Note that here the pitch-shifted version replaces the original unacceptable one.

Concealment

If your signal is only slightly out of tune, you can make the problem not as evident by "spreading out" the pitch center. This will tend to diffuse or mask the minor pitch problems and make them not as obvious in the context of the mix. Again, here you are usually changing the pitch bya few cents.

Radical Alterations

If your signal is entirely wrong (in the wrong key, incorrect octave, etc.) you can alter the pitch to the extent that the origianl signal is completely transformed into something new or different. This is especially useful in post production situations. Here you would be using pitch changesin half step intervals.

*****Pitch Shfter Parameter Controls*****

1) Main (Coarse) Pitch

This control alters the pitch of the input signal in musical half step intervals. For example, three 1/2 steps intervals = a minor 3rd music interval.

2) Fine Picth (Cents)

This control changes the pitch of a signal in very small increments. With Fine Pitch, the 1/2 step interval is sub divided into 100 smaller divisions each called a cent (100 cents = 1/2 step interval)

3) Delay Time

All modern pitch changers are digital devices and as such have the ability to take the input signal and delay its processed output. This is useful when using the pitch shifter to double or thicken a signal. Time delays short, usually in milliseconds (1000 ms = 1 sec).

4) Feedback (Regeneration)

This parameter takes the processed output signal and sends it back into the input for further processing. This control is in % (of output signal fed back into the input).
