Brief on synthesizer

*Glossary:

- Microprocessor: Computer chips

- Hybrid: Analog in Digital circuitry

- Presets: You don’t have to create your own sounds (e.g. Yamaha DX7 --> 32 factory patches)

- Polyphony: Multiple voices (e.g. Roland Juno --> 5 polyphony)

1. Analog Synthesizer

- Analog circuit base

- Generate sound electrically

- Consist of VCOs (Voltage Controlled Oscillators), VCFs (Voltage Controlled Filters), and VCAs (Voltage Controlled Amplifiers)

e.g. Sequential Circuits' 'Prophet-5' is the first microprocessor-controlled analog synthesizer

2. Digital Synthesizer

- DSP (Digital Signal Processor) generates sound

- Adopt digitally controlled Oscillators, Filters, and Amplifiers

- Working with MIDI

3. Hybrid Synthesizer

- Mixture with Analog and Digital circuitry

- Consist of Analog and Digital Oscillators and Filters

- MIDI compatible

*Proprietary Sequencer:

- Before MIDI appear, ‘Proprietary Clock’ controlled drum machines and synthesizer through pulse signal
