Silence+Other Sounds ‘Maleventum’: A Kontakt Library providing Cinematic Sounds of Epic War Horns from Ancient Nordic and Celtic Cultures
'Maleventum' is a Kontakt library based on the sound of medieval and Viking horns that provides cinematic sounds of epic war horns. It was initially released in October 2020 by Silence+Other Sounds, an Italian boutique sound design company. Each sound and instrument of Maleventum instantly evokes scenes of ‘forgotten dark ages’, ‘Viking armies and warriors’, ‘epic ancient battles’, ‘vast frozen landscapes’, ‘mystical pagan cults’ and ‘supernatural presences hovering in the wind of the nordic woods’.
Maleventum is for TV, film and game composers and sound designers looking for unique, carefully crafted sounds to enrich their compositions. It fits particularly well the ‘epic genre’, with specific regard to fantasy and dark age movies. It will be a very useful tool to provide plenty of inspiration for horror and thriller composers as well as producers of dark electronic music and ambient.
The Silence+Other Sounds team have committed to a deep research in the cinematic sound of epic war horns from ancient Nordic and Celtic cultures. To recreate the evocative Nordic feel of Maleventum, they have recorded a huge amount of original medieval horn instruments, classical orchestral trombone and tuba, traditional flutes, horn instruments from the pastoral tradition across Europe and even self-built blowing horns and pipes. All of these sounds have been processed and layered to create a collection of 'epic braams*', 'hunt horn calls', 'war horns', 'low tone brass sounds', 'high pitched screaming trumpets', 'animal-esque wailing sounds' and much more.
*Braams is a mega powerful “horn-like” sound that blasts with a long sustain and screaming. You can think of a Braam sound as a mix between huge brass instruments playing at high dynamics and a big cruise ship horn sound.
Maleventum consists of two separate instruments: a ‘Horn & Flute Pads’ module, which is playable and MPE(MIDI Polyphonic Expression) compatible, and a ‘Sound Design’ module featuring horn SFX which can be manipulated in many ways. The ‘Horn & Flute Pads’ module is a Kontakt instrument that provides over 100 snapshots and 58 MPE Multis and combines up to 4 layers of horns, flutes and rare bagpipe sounds and textures. The Horn & Flute instrument really shines when creating evoking, mystical and intimate tonal textures. The ‘Sound Design’ module is a Kontakt sampler of over 260 one-shot sounds (24 bit / 96 kHz / .wav) based on epic cinematic horns, tuned braams, war horns, viking horn calls, Nordic hunt horns, dissonant trumpets, creature-reminiscent eerie horn tones, loud aggressive stabs, brass staccatos, long evocative tones, and battle horn calls. With the intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface), you can individually manipulate each sample, combine multiple sounds and obtain your own bombastic war horn stabs and viking braams.
Maleventum features an useful Global Tuning function to tune all the samples to the same root key with just one knob, which turns very useful for more minimalist and aggressive compositions such as trailer music. The UI in Maleventum also includes a 'cinematic low end boost' function, which instantly invigorates the bass frequency register of the samples with just one click, to make your braams really roar. Since Maleventum is compatible with MPE, you can easily MIDI map Volume, Low Pass Filter, High Pass Filter and LFO rate for each of the 4 layers of the playable instrument by using Mapping screen. All of these parameters can be controlled per note, allowing you to create custom patches of rich, evolving and expressive pads and melodies from over 120 selectable horn pad sounds and textures, 58 MPE Multis and over 100 snapshots.
The success of Maleventum (Epic War Horns) in the market led to the recent release of Maleventum 2(Arcane Flutes of Native America). The overall purpose of the Maleventum series is to sample ancient wind instruments and use them to create epic cinematic sounds with a new, never-heard-before flavor. For the Epic War Horns chapter, the idea is to recreate a more primal and raw version of the typical horn sounds that you find in most trailer and soundtracks in the epic or fantasy genre.

Compatibility
You don't necessarily need Kontakt to use the sounds. You can import every sounds in your DAW, in your favorite audio sampler, in video editing software or in any software able to handle .wav files. However, if you want to use provided the Kontakt instruments, at least a Full version of Kontakt 5.8.1 is required. The free version of Kontakt player is Not supported.
