List of Unions and Guilds

AF of M: American Federation of Musicians

This Union has over 30,000 members, with 10% in Canada. Their headquarters are in NYC with 600 local offices. They have no jurisdiction over composers. Their membership has slowly been decreasing and as a result, so has their power. As this is a bona fide Union, they can protect their members against non-paying employers by suing or blacklisting.

AFTRA: American Federation of Television and Radio Artists

This is a version of the AF of M for singers. This is an AFL-CIO affiliated union also. It has 60,000 members. These include big name stars, as well as the average session singer. This union is also headquartered in NYC, with 40 regional offices.

The Four “A” Unions:

AEA: Actors Equity Association

AGVA: American Guild of Variety Artists

AGMA: American Guild of Musical Artists

SAG: Screen Actors Guild

AEA: “Equity” This represents professional actors, directors and theatre people. This is the most flexible with producers on how much artists should be paid.

AGVA: This group represents cabaret artist performing live in clubs, casinos, resorts and fairgrounds.

AGMA: This group was organized in the 1930’s and was formed to serve the interests of singers and dancers in opera, ballet, concert, and recital fields.

SAG: This most widely known artists’ union. It has jurisdiction over all actors, singers and instrumentalists who perform in theatrical motion pictures and television movies.
