Modulation Effect (2)

In modulation effect:

- A primary wave (usually a low frequency oscillator: LFO) combined with a secondary wave (music) to control the speed and the amount that delays change

- Amplitude (level) controls the strength of effects

EG (Envelope Generator):

- Shallow = 10 ms - 30 ms

- Deep = 10 ms - 100 ms

*Changing delays in real time, changes the sample rate which changes the pitch

Tips on using modulation effects:

- Less amount of use is more effective

- Most modulation effects work best with a combination of the original sound and the effect (EG 50:50)

- The original and effect typically should be panned to the same stereo location

- Typically works best on harmonically rich and with sustain

- Extreme use makes music out of tune

Parameters:

- Speed/Rate (Hz): Control LFO frequency. Usually set very slow for musical effect. It’s not heard. It changes delays which changes pitch.

- Width/Depth: Controls LFO amplitude

- EG: Narrow —> 5 ms ~ 10 ms; Wide —> 10 ms ~ 100 ms
