Automation

Automation:

- An audio system that allows you to store, retrieve, and alter parameters

Data: numerical or other information represented in a form suitable for processing a computer

- Store data (like recording) —> [write]

- Retrieve data (like playback) —> [read]

- Alter data (punch in) —> [update]

Original ways (Automation)

Without automation:

- All the moves had to be executed in one pass

- Limited what you could do with your hands

- One mistake & it’s blown

- Can’t go back to fix stuff

- Can’t put together a great mix by editing good parts together

- You can’t write (document) settings or photograph the console

Technical aspects of automation

- Static settings: Settings that stay the same (eg. compressors, gating, panning…)

- Dynamic settings: Settings that move (eg. level & mute (a.k.a. cuts))

- Dynamic settings:

What? —> is changing (eg. fader ride)

How much? —> the amount of the change

When? —> when does the more (event) occur

What parameters can be automated?

- Mix levels

- EQ

- Fade ending (also level change)

- Mutes (on/off)

- Effects

- Pan setting

- Effects sending (going to)

- Dynamic processor

- Effect returns (coming from)
