MP3 Encoding & Masking

 

MP3 Encoding:

1. Sounds that are "unheard" are removed, data is discarded (=> Throw out unimportant data) 

2. Based on psychoacoustics -> 'Masking'

 

 

Masking:

1. Masking in Time domain: Before & After loud sounds

2. Masking in Frequency domain: Within critical bands

*Process of MP3 Encoding:

i) Sound is windowed in time segments

ii) Sound is windowed into frequency segments

iii) Irrelevant (masked) data is thrown out

iv) Sound is re-quantized at new level
