- Rotating head machines 

- Signal put on tape as a 'data burst' to play back

- The data burst is put into a Ram Buffer

- It comes out of the buffer as a continuous time stream and is converted back to analog

- 8 track units - can synchronize up to 16 units => 128 tracks

a) Tascam DA-88

- Uses a Hi-8mm video tape

- Get 108 min. recording on a 120 min. tape

 

b) Alesis ADAT (Alesis Digital Audio Tape)

- Uses S-VHS tape. Get 40 min. and 40 sec. on a 120 min. tape
