Cocktail Party Effect 

 

The cocktail party effect is a phenomenon in which participants at the party can selectively focus on the conversation of a specific person, even though they are in a room with noisy surroundings. The cocktail party effect occurs because no matter how many voices come into your ears, your brain picks and processes only one of them.

 

Sound engineers familiar with cocktail party effects can respond more sensitively to sounds and adjust more detailed sounds than the public at the venue. Also, when you do music mixing, you can adjust volumes of each instruments using the cocktail party effect in order to achieve balance of the mixing.
