Recording and Editing Human Voice (1)

When most people think of recording, they probably think about recording 'music'. While it is true that most engineering work in the record business is about music, there are numerous times when an engineer will be called upon to record and process the spoken word. Examples of this are audio books, film dialog, narration and voice-over recording for movies, videos, commercials, radio productions, etc.

Recording and editing the human voice requires knowledge of how the voice produces and generates sound and words. Things like breathing patterns, the position of the mouth, teeth, and tongue all play a part in the uniqueness and understandability of the spoken word.

Once captured, the spoken word usually needs to be edited to bring it within precise timing requirements, or to change the meaning of the sentence.
