Basic Things To Do in Your Mixing with Pro Tools

  • Clean up any tracks that have unwanted sounds on them. Listen to the entire recording one track at a time. For example, there are two guitar tracks. Which one does what?
  • Add comments to the tracks by double-clicking the tracks' name and typing in the comments window that opens.
  • Trim the front of the song and move the entire file (Grouped and in Shuffle mode) to the start.
  • Normalize all your tracks using the Normalize AudioSuite plug-in. You can normalize one track at a time or do them all at once in a group. Remember that you do not always normalize every track. If your tracks are rather low in amplitude then you can use it.
  • Get your levels and set your panning.
  • Create EQ at the inserts for tracks. You will be doing something special with EQ later.
  • Create a send for all channels so you can add reverb on tracks that can use it. This send can be mono even if you are sending to a stereo effect like stereo reverb.
  • Make sure the Return channel is already in place, so you just need to put an effect plug-in inline at the insert of the Aux Return channel.
  • Do not forget to set the input of the Aux Return to the same bus that you are sending on.
  • Add more Aux Return channels if you need. You might want to add more fx plug-ins to your tracks. To do this you need only create an Aux Return and put additional effect plug-ins at its insert. You must also create a send for all the tracks you wish to send to that Aux Return with your fx plug-in. Remember to name your I/O assignments.
