A Brief on Signal Generator (1)

The signal generator (a.k.a. sine wave generator) is a valuable tool for diagnosis and repair of audio electronics. It is an essential piece of equipment for analog tape machine alignment, room acoustics calibration, and sound reinforcement setup. You will select frequencies and adjust the output level of the signal generator then you will read the generator's output level on the ACVM. You will have to connect the signal generator with the ACVM before you start measuring the signal level. It uses the signal generator to send sine waves and an ACVM to measure the level of the generator's output. Follow the steps below to set up the signal generator for general use.

*Generator Maximum and Minimum Output Levels

1) Connect the output of the signal generator to the input of the ACVM.

2) Set the ACVM's range selector switch to the highest position.

3) Set the generator to its lowest output level.

4) Adjust the generator frequency to 1,000 Hz.

5) Adjust the ACVM's range selector switch until the meter deflection is readable on the red dB scale and read the generator output voltage.

(To do this, turn the ACVM range selector counterclockwise until the scale needle falls somewhere on the red scale. You will have to lower the range switch quite a bit, and the first few changes will not show any needle movement, but keep on going. You are measuring the generator's minimum output level. It will be very low.)

6) Record the minimum generator output level. (Lgen. min. _____ dB)

7) Return the ACVM range selector switch to its highest position.

8) Set the generator to its highest output level.

9) Adjust the ACVM's range selector switch until the meter deflection is readable on the red dB scale and read the generator output voltage.

(To do this, turn the ACVM range selector counterclockwise until the scale needle falls somewhere on the red scale. What you are measuring is the generator's maximum output level.)

10) Record the maximum generator output level. (Lgen. max. _____ dB)
