Pink Parrot Studio 'Quadtrack': A Retro-Inspired Groovebox Combining Commodore Amiga Sound with Modern Sequencing
Berlin-based gaming and music software developer Pink Parrot Studio has announced the release of 'Quadtrack', a uniquely designed computer-based groovebox that blends the distinctive sonic character of the classic Commodore Amiga computer with modern live sequencing capabilities. Designed for electronic musicians, retro-computing enthusiasts, and experimental producers, Quadtrack aims to bridge the gap between vintage digital sound aesthetics and contemporary groove production workflows.
Unlike conventional grooveboxes that rely on dedicated hardware platforms, Quadtrack reimagines the computer itself as a modern groove production instrument. The software recreates the recognizable texture of Amiga-era sample playback while integrating real-time sequencing tools capable of producing everything from traditional electronic rhythms to highly experimental rhythmic structures. According to Pink Parrot Studio, the project was developed using the Scorpion Engine game development platform for Amiga systems before being adapted to run on modern Mac, Windows, and Linux computers through the free Universal Amiga Emulator (UAE).
The release arrives during a growing resurgence of interest in retro computing, vintage sample playback, and lo-fi digital audio aesthetics. Quadtrack embraces this trend by combining minimal system requirements with a straightforward workflow intended to make electronic groove creation more accessible. The interface is designed around quick interaction and dedicated keyboard shortcuts, allowing users to create patterns and manipulate sequences without requiring large-scale studio setups or expensive hardware environments.
Quadtrack ships with a variety of included sample libraries, including ARCADE, DANK, FUTURE/RETRO, JUNGLIST, KLUBNACHT, MAGIC POCKETS, MSX CX5M, POWERHANDLE, RAVE, and TRONBERG. Each sound set contains 64 individual samples, providing users with a wide range of source material for rhythm production and experimental sequencing. The groovebox itself features four independent tracks, each equipped with a familiar 16-step sequencer architecture and multiple modulation options capable of producing both subtle variations and chaotic rhythmic transformations.
Pink Parrot Studio also distributes Quadtrack with a free runtime version of UAE, enabling the software to function as a standalone application on modern systems. At the same time, the groovebox can also operate on original Amiga hardware equipped with 2 MB of chip RAM and at least a Motorola 68040 processor, although memory limitations naturally affect sample playback capabilities on legacy systems.
For users integrating Quadtrack into contemporary production workflows, audio can be routed into external DAWs using several existing third-party solutions. UAE users additionally benefit from save-state functionality, allowing projects and live performance setups to be stored, recalled, and shared efficiently.
Created by Dataline, a former Elektron product specialist recognized for exploring the intersection of electronic instruments, retro gaming systems, vintage computers, and hardware-based music production, Quadtrack presents an unconventional approach to groove creation. In an era dominated by massive sample libraries and increasingly polished virtual instruments, Quadtrack instead focuses on immediacy, experimentation, and the nostalgic character of early digital sound design.
**Interested in hearing what Quadtrack can do? To coincide with the release, Quad X Quad — a 16-track compilation created entirely with Quadtrack — is now available on Bandcamp as a name-your-price digital album: https://dataline.bandcamp.com/album/quad-x-quad
Founded by Dataline, Pink Parrot Studio creates software that honours the spirit of classic computing while embracing contemporary design and usability — retro computing meets modern creativity fuelled by decades of passion for classic home computer systems and music technology. The uniquely innovative computer-based groovebox that is Quadtrack is its second software release, following the fast-paced game Callback - Legend of the Power Handle.
