About 'Noise'

 

Noise is something we are quite familiar with and is a simple sound, yet its precise definition is not actually straightforward. A common definition of noise is 'a sound present in all sound environments, generated by the irregular movement of air particles.' In music, noise is often defined as 'unwanted sound' or 'abnormal sound.' Noise can be heard when the volume is turned up in an audio playback system without any input. Noise falls into the category of non-periodic sounds and includes elements unrelated to frequency. White noise is named by analogy to white light, which contains all colors of light, as it includes all frequencies combined in equal proportion. When the frequencies of noise are structured differently, it is often referred to by color. Pink noise refers to noise that has equal energy per octave, while blue noise refers to noise where the high frequencies are particularly strong.
