Producer's Instructions

Assume that you are not the producer but the engineer. Therefore, you do need to follow some guidelines from the producer below. That means don't say you didn't pan any tracks because you personally like mono! Imagine you have only 2 hours. You should spend the first hour and a half mixing and the last half hour bouncing to stereo and answering the questions below.

Producer's Instructions:

  • Make a stereo mix. (Be sure to do your panning on the correct mixing layer.) Although some instruments may be more prominently featured than others, make sure any instruments you use in the mix are clear. They should each have their own space in the mix in terms of frequency, left-right panorama, and foreground/background space.
  • Use at least some of the effects such as reverb, delay, modulation effects in ways that enhance the mix.
  • Use the technology tastefully. Pretend your song will be on the radio. Do not use effects gratuitously (= don't use them for your own amusement or to show off that you know how to do something). Make sure that what you're doing makes sense for the song.
  • Mix your song down to stereo. Do a real-time mix making all your fader and effects moves as the song is gong down to the stereo bus.

After you finish mixing, answer the following questions:

  • What type of audience/genre did you mix for?
  • If you worked with a partner, on what isues, if any, did you have to compromise on to please both engineers?
