Royalty Administration, Collection, and Licensing

ASCAP, BMI and SESAC each impose an annual blanket license fee upon radio broadcasters. There’s a three and a half to ten percent sliding scale based upon advertising revenue, output power (wattage), Arbitron ratings, and whether it’s AM or FM. The purely all-music type format, with minimal talk/chat and current affairs, pay the most. The percentage is based primarily on annual advertising revenue.

As a new member, with no published songs or records, ASCAP and BMI will admit you to their membership as a Writer and Provisional (self) Publisher for a term between six months and a year.

If you can establish public or recorded use of your music, ASCAP and BMI will admit you as a Writer and Provisional (self-publishing) Publisher, member. Membership is mostly totally exclusive to one organization or another, for either six months (ASCAP) or one year (BMI). You are permitted only to act as your own music’s publisher. Thereafter, if you fulfill several (reasonable) requirements, you’ll become a “proper” music publisher - fully empowered. When you increase or expand the sphere of your industry activity, build an Indie label, and become incorporated, your “company” can become a Publisher member of the other organization. With a little resourcefulness, it’s possible to create a corporate “shadow” of yourself as a writer/author, which can, as an artificial corporate entity, join the other organization as a Writer member.
