Sound Power & Sound Pressure

Sound Power

- The energy of sound waves generated from the sound source for 1 second

- The Sound Power Level (SWL) of the sound power W for the sound power W0 is as follows (W0 is the reference value; W0 = 10-12W):

SWL = 10log10W/W0 dB

e.g.1) How much does the sound power level increase if you double the sound output (W)?

: 10log(2W/1W) = 10 x log2 = 10 x 0.301 = 3.01 dB

e.g.2) What is the sound power level (SWL) when the output power is 10W and the reference value is 10-12W?

: SWL = 10log(10W/10-12W) = 10log(10/10-12) = 10(log10-(-12log10)) = 10(log10+12log10)

= 10(1+12) = 130 dB

e.g.3) How much is the sound output when the sound power level (SWL) is 110 dB?

: SWL = 110 = 10log(W/10-12) = 10logW + 10x12log10 = 10logW + 120 =>

110 - 120 = 10logW ==> -10 = 10logW ==> -1 = logW,  ∴ W = 1/10 = 0.1

Sound Pressure

When a sound source vibrates, this vibration changes the atmospheric pressure, and this pressure vibrates the eardrum and we hear it

- Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is a level of the atmospheric pressure and represents the physical size of the sound

- Sound Pressure is a pressure, so we use the pressure unit Pa (Pascal, 1 Pa = 0.1 kg pressure/1m2) in its definition:

SPL = 20log(p/p0) dB

(p0 is the reference value, p0 = 2 x 10−5 N/m2)

e.g.) How much SPL dBs increase when the sound pressure is increased 15 times?

: 20log(15p/p) = 20log15 = 23.5 dB

*A sound source produces sound power and this generates a sound pressure fluctuation in the air. Sound power is the distance independence of cause of this, whereas sound pressure is the distance-dependent effect. (© Sengpiel Audio)
