Side-chain mechanism (De-Esser, Ducker) (1)

Side-chain

- Access to circuits that allow us to use one signal or processor to affect another signal or processor

- A compressor with a side-chain input controls gain from main input to output based on the level of the signal at the side-chain input

A sidechain with EQ controls can be used to reduce the volume of signals that have a strong spectral content within a certain frequency range

- Only found on dynamics processors such as Compressor/Limiter & Expander/Gates

*Side-chain products in audio market:

1. De-Esser

- Used to reduce sibilant sounds such as “s”, “c”, “sh”, or “ch”

- A compressor with EQ on its side chain

- Works by boosting High Frequency (5k ~ 20 Khz) -> This cause signal to rise above threshold

- So, the compressor only works when sibilant sounds (s, c, sh & ch) are made

- Very fast attack and release

2. Ducker

- Used to lower background music when someone talks into a mic

- Voice signal causes expander to lower music by a set number of dB (Range Control)
