Expander:

- A dynamic processor that increases dynamic range by making low level sound softer

- “If you get soft, I’ll make you softer”

 

 

Gates:

- A dynamic processor that increases dynamic range by shutting low level sound off

- “If you get soft, I’ll shut you off”

 

 

 

Uses:

 

1. Corrective uses (clean out problems)

- Noise reduction (hum, tape hiss, leakage, buzz, rumble, etc.)

- Turn off unwanted signals (e.g. Turn off sound from another source to mic/channel)

- Turn off unused Mics on stage 

 

 

2. Creative uses

- Triggering (keying) a note controls sound by turning on/off another sound

 

ex) Kicking Bass drum triggers low bass note from an oscillator and this make bass drum sound more longer & deeper

 

ex) Hitting Snare drum triggers a pink/white noise from an oscillator on/off

 

- Reduce reverb tails: Gated reverb on/off, Control room ambience

 

- Manipulate musicians’ technique by softening attack    

- Shorten the envelope
