NEW record labels are an effective conduit for the development and promotion of new music.

From the origins of recorded popular music in the early 20th century, a colorful range of vibrant independent labels have succeeded in enriching the music industry. Driven by a passion for music, the maverick entrepreneur has therefore enjoyed a venerated place in the short annals of the music industry.

From the unsigned artist’s perspective, starting your own small label can serve as a useful vehicle to a more high-profile record deal elsewhere. Consider Alan McGee’s recent signings - Glasgow’s Cosmic Rough Riders, who have now sold over 60,000 albums. This act released two albums on their own independent label - Raft Records - sold 2,000 copies, secured a resourceful manager and caught the attention of Poptones. Likewise, many other artists, from Simply Red to travis and Coldplay, released their own limited edition product, and in doing so, raised their profile in A&R circles.
