Record Label Business

Label Types

Major: A self-contained multi-national (global) corporation, best suited to a mass-marketing approach. Amongst a diversity of extra-musical activities, is usually a film company and/or cable/television interest.

Subsidiary: Majors create semi-autonomous, in-house Indie-type labels, so as to enjoy some of the more "sweetwise" music market income. An elected president is given an operating budget and lots of creative freedom, regarding music-styles, artist signed and promotion campaigns. Administration, distribution and financial collections, are all done by the Major.

Associate Label: An Indie label distributed by a Major, paying for this service, and retaining independence.

Domestic Affiliate: An Indie label, having accepted a Major's offer of recording budget financing, manufacturing and distribution services; agrees to split the record sales profit, with the Major. Since the only label business left, is A&R, plus promotion, the independent has lost quite a lot of control, to the Major.

Foreign Affiliate: The overseas division of each of the world's major labels. So, the London based division, of America's W.E.A. group, is its British (foreign) affiliate.

Indie: A freethinking, owner operated, non-bureaucratic, sweetwise type label.

Coda: The country in which a Major's head-office is based, or from which it originated, is called the Prime Territory.
