Some Music Production "Tips"

Don't Admire Your Own Work

When inspiration strikes, get it down and MOVE ON QUICKLY while you're hot. If you created a great section, beat, whatever, give it a quick listen and get to the next chore. Listening to your own music too much makes you Narcissistic. Narcissist, the myth says, fell in love with his own reflection in the water and didn't do anything productive with his life.

If You Have to Work Too Hard On An Idea, It's Probably Not A Good One

I have found that my best productions are also the fastest. This situation may be slightly different for a beginner still learning concepts, but I still believe that a solid, simple, easy to accomplish idea is better than an elaborate project that doesn't get completed.

Building from the Bottom Up

Most popular music is driven by the drums. We start with the drums because the rhythm of the beat provides the basis for what all of the other instruments will play. There are exceptions to this in Broadway and Jazz music where the drums only "accent" the music rather than driving it. Typically, producers work their way up the frequency spectrum after the drums adding Bass second, Chords third and other tracks to fill in the frequency and rhythmic "holes" that might be left.
