Drum Programming Basics (1)

Adjust level, pitch, pan, and length until your drum pattern sounds as close as possible to the original recording:

1. Adjust the pitch on tom-toms channels to make the high-tom channel sound higher in pitch and the low-tom lower in pitch. You can leave the mid-tom at the default (0) pitch. By changing the pitch, you are changing the sample rate (speed) of the sound on that channel. This makes the sound higher and also faster like adjusting the vari-speed on a turntable.

2. Pan the tom-toms. Typically, tom-toms pan left to right with the highest tom panned to 9:00, the middle tom panned to 12:00, and the lowest tom panned to 3:00.

3. Shorten the decay length of the kick drum. You can apply an abrupt decay or a gradual decay.
