Fundamental Frequency

Complex sound:

- Created by complex vibration (phase(Ø) relationships)

Timbre (Tonality):

- Sound with harmonic content

Harmonic:

- Multiple of a fundamental frequency

- They can be odd and even multiples

Fundamental Frequency:

- The played note

- The base frequency upon which the harmonics are structured

ex) If you play A=440Hz, then 440Hz is the fundamental

The fundamental:

- is the lowest frequency of the structure

- is the lowest component

- It is a.k.a. the first harmonic

e.g.

2nd Harmonic = 2 x the fundamental

3rd Harmonic = 3 x the fundamental

Pitch:

- Perception of frequency

Perception:

- At 'Even' Harmonics:

Tend to sound rich, sweet, full, phatt, smooth…

ex) Violin, viola, …

- At 'Odd' Harmonics:

Sound raspy, edgy, hard, harsh, solid, lust…

ex) Breath, trumpet, …
