Harmonic Creation

▲ String (A=440 Hz):

- Tuned to a frequency/note

- The full length of the string is equal to the tuned frequency's wavelength

When struck:

a) The string oscillates producing A=440

b) Energy is introduced into the string

c) The string became a medium for the energy

d) The energy moves outward from the point of impact

e) They travel to the ends of the string (the tie down points)

f) The tie down points behave as barriers reflecting the energy waves to the string

The energy waves meet in the center of the string:

- Since they are moving in opposite directions (out of phase), a null point is created in the center

*null point => 'point of cancellation'

- This node acts as barrier causing the string to split and also vibrate in behaves

- Each 1/2 length = 1/2 the wave length of the full string

- When wavelength is halved, the frequency is doubled

- This is the 2nd harmonic: 2 x the fundamental

ex) when trumpet vibrate, same thing happened

Harmonic Creation:

- When the energies of the even harmonics, plus distortions from the instrument are added in, odd harmonics are created
