An Overview of Post-Production Work

 

Assume that you are watching a commercial you will be working on for your post-production work. You will analyze the picture and come up with a potential structure for the soundtrack (you should be thinking about the dialog, music, and sound effects separately) and will make a list of the sounds you will need. This list must be written according to a standard that comes from the video post world. You will be using a cue sheet to document the sounds you will be working with. The process of identifying each sound is called 'spotting'. You will use this cue sheet to record, edit, and mix the sounds you will be spotting.

 

The major differences between an audio post studio and a music studio lie chiefly in the areas of machine synchronization. A professional audio post suite will have video and audio machines (which can be analog or digital as well as tape or tape-less), MIDI synthesizers or sound modules, synchronizers, and computers running non-linear audio programs. The entire system has to be running in sync, meaning that all devices in the system must be running together, following the same speed (or clock) and location (time code).

 

Post-production engineers should have a solid foundation in the following areas:

  • A strong knowledge of post-related equipments.
  • Signal flow: they must be able to get around a post studio with ease. They should be able to learn quickly how the signal flows from source to destination and operate the equipment accordingly. They should know how to configure the various pieces of hardware, be able to troubleshoot the system, and come up with solutions on the spot.
  • Recording and editing: they should know the basic operations of a digital audio workstation (e.g. Pro Tools).
