MIDI Message (2)

MIDI digitally communicates musical performance data through a standard MIDI cable as a string of MIDI messages that are transmitted at a speed of 31.25 Kbaud (bits/second). This data can only travel over a single MIDI line in one direction, from a single source to a destination.

MIDI In:

- Receives MIDI messages from external source

MIDI Out:

- Transmits MIDI messages from the device to other

MIDI Thru:

- Transmits an “exact copy of the incoming data at the MIDI In port” to another MIDI instrument or device

There are only two valid ways to connect to a MIDI device to another using a standard MIDI cable:

i) connect a “MIDI-Out” port of one device to the “MIDI-In” port of the next device

ii) connect a “MIDI Thru” port of one device to the “MIDI-In” port of the next device
