Balanced Transmission System & Unbalanced Transmission System

Let’s take a closer look at the Unbalanced Transmission System and Balanced Transmission System.

When you transmit an electronic signal from one point to another, you receive the same amount of electron energy as the amount of electron energy sent. Therefore, when transmitting electronic signals through cables, you must have both a wire that sends electronic signals and a wire that receives an electronic signal that comes back. The unbalanced transmission system consists of a wire (hot in polarity) which sends electronic signals and a ground, and the ground wires also receiving electronic signals. Therefore, unlike a ground wire, a wire that send polarized (hot) electronic signals do not have a shield against external electromagnetic waves or electric fields, so it is difficult to send electronic signals to a long distance. Thus, in unbalanced transmission system, only one wire, ground, is protected by a shield and the other wire (hot) is exposed to external electrical interferences.

On the other hand, balanced transmission systems can send low-level electronic signals far away (for this reason, all telephone lines used by telecommunications companies use balanced cables). Transformers (Operational Amplifiers) are used at both ends of the balanced transmission system wires (hot, cold) to protect both wires from external interferences such as electromagnetic waves or electric fields by processing of grounding both wires. In the end, balanced cables are stronger against external electrical environments than unbalanced cables, so they can effectively send signals to a long distance, while unbalanced cables are being used in relatively small audio systems that do not require a longer distance transmission.
