Mixing Console (Review)

*Console's 3 sections

Input

- Can accept either mic level or line level signal

- Phantom power 48v. DC.

- Attenuation Pad to reduce input level to protect mic preamp from overload distortion

(Mic preamp: Up to +60 dB gain to bring Mic level up to Line level)

Auxiliary Sends (Aux)

- Independent Mixing systems used to send signals to musician's headphones while recording (pre) or overdubbing & to send to a major reverb device while mixing (mixing post)

- Have a pre/post switch: it determines if input to the Aux is before (pre) or after (post) the channel fader

- Fader has solo & mute buttons: mute button cuts signal through a channel, solo button mutes all other channels except the channel selected

Assignment Matrix: Sends signal from input channel to an output bus - which takes signal to a track on the M-TRK (Muti-Track recorder)

Direct Input: Takes signal from a channel to the same number track on the M-TRK

Output

- Summing Amp (unity gain = 0 dB gain): combines signals before they are sent to the M-TRK

- Fader

- Patch points

Monitor section

Accepts signal from either output bus or the M-TRK

- Bus/Tape Switch: Determines the input to the monitor section

- Aux returns: Signal back from reverb device to be mixed in with other signals

- Monitor Master fader: For 'Control Room level' (85dB ~ 90dB SPL); has a Dim switch to lower Control Room level a set number of dB

- Monitor Panpot (on each channel): Determines L+R stereo placement

- Monitor select switches: Determines what is sent to Monitor Speakers

- Master fader

- Aux masters

- Returns from Mix machines

VU meters: For analog averaging meter - 'like human hearing'

Peak meters: Track all transients (must use for digital; Human ear cannot discrete peaks)

Communications

TalkBack Mic (TB) - built into console

Can send voice to:

(1) Studio Monitor Speakers

(2) Musician's Headphones

(3) Slate - to all machines in Record mode
