Video Color Coding Systems

 

1. PAL (Phase Alternate Line)

A system of coding color information for television transmission used primarily in Europe, Latin America, and other areas which use 50 Hz AC line frequency.

 

2. SECAM (Sequential Color with Memory)

A French system of coding color information for television transmission used primarily in France, some of Eastern Europe and Russia and other areas which use 50 Hz AC line frequency.

 

3. NTSC (National Television System Committee)

A system of coding color information for television transmission used primarily in the US and Japan. It uses a reference frequency of 59.94 Hz and a frame rate of 29.97.

 

 

 

Frame Count

The number of frames that are counted in one second of audio, film or video, regardless of the running speed.

 

Frame Rate vs. Frame Count

Remember: 'Frame Rate' is the actual speed of frames per second (fps) where as 'Frame Count' is a method for numbering frames where as.

 

Why is 29.97 fps a problem?

In essence because it is not a whole number. This causes the nominal 'frame count' and the actual 'frame rate' to differ. Over time the video will lag behind the clock at 1.8 frames per minute.Over a period of 1 hour (SMPTE) the video will be 3.6 seconds or 108 extra frames longer in relation to the wall clock. To overcome this discrepancy 'drop frame' is used.

 

 

Drop Frame (DF) 

A SMPTE frame numbering system designed to make time code incrementing at 29.97 fps agree with a real time clock.

In Drop Frame Counting two frames are dropped every minute, except fro every tenth minute, resulting 108 frames being dropped every hour.

Non-Drop Frame (NDF)

The fundamental SMPTE frame numbering system which always counts 30 full frames before incrementing to the next second.
