How to Really Make A Digital Recording Without Distortion

DAT recorder's panel meters cannot be trusted any more than our ears when it comes to helping us eliminate distortion. What are we supposed to do then? In practical operation (where you might not have an oscilloscope to monitor), you would normally record the average program material at no more than -12 dB on the meters. This would then build in 12 dB of headroom before any clipping occurred. If this is not enough safety for you, then set your record level average at some point lower then -12 dB. The "bottom line" answer is practice and then practice one more time until you are confident you have no peaks that are clipped in the digital domain. Experience with the program content is helful here.

* This is not true of all PPMs (Peak Program Meters). Generally speaking, the PPMs found in high quality consoles, digital multitrack open reel tape machines, and high-end workstations will be of sufficient accuracy to allow the engineer to rely on them for absolute peak readings with confidence.
