Absolute Time (A-Time)

The DAT tape format can hold up to 120 minutes of stereo audio and enough data in a subcode to make accurate tape location possible and timing information available. Two of the most powerful features of the DAT format are; 1) the ability to quickly locate to any spot on the tape, and 2) being able to generate elapsed time information. To use these features there must be an accurate, uninterrupted sequence of time printed in the subcode of the DAT tape. This is called the tape's *Absolute Time or A-time. With properly recorded A-time you will be able to perform functions automatically using the machine's ability to read the A-time in fast wind modes. Without proper A-time, these functions become difficult, inaccurate, or simply unavailable. If you wish to use A-time properly, you must take care and pay attention to the correct programming sequence when recording.

 

 

* Absolute time is an encoded track containing time related information. It is very useful because it allows the engineer to know exactly where the last recorded part of the tape is and cue up to that location prior to recording again (a mode called END SEARCH). This is helpful because a DAT tape cannot generally be listened to in a fast wind mode (something that can be done with an analog tape machine). In addition, all information about elapsed program time (P-time) and time remaining are calculated using the A-time information associated with the recording. Absolute time is a very powerful tool to have recorded on a tape.

 

For A-time to be used effectively, it must be recorded on the entire length of the DAT tape in 'one unbroken sequence of time numbers'. You may stop and re-start recording on a tape but the re-recording must be done so as to prevent gaps in the recorded A-time.
