The Piano Keyboard

- The Piano Keyboard contains a series of 12 tones that are repeated over many octaves. A full-size piano keyboard has 88 keys for a total of about seven octaves.

- The white keys are naturals and the black keys are either sharp or flat. Sharp (#) means "above" and flat (b) means "below". The Musical alphabet contains the following white keys. C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Each black key in between the white keys has two names you can refer to them by, depending on whether your perspective is above or below. They are: C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab, and A#/Bb.

- A MIDI keyboard can have as few as 24 keys or as many as 88. Even with a smaller MIDI keyboard, you can record MIDI data in all octaves by Transposing the octave of the data you create.

- The sound created by a MIDI controller is entirely dependent upon the sound module it is connected to and the individual sounds mapped to any particular tone and octave. It is possible to play drum sounds and sound effects, rather than musical notes if the sound module is so mapped.
