Drum Machines: Vintage and Virtual

If you don't have access to a drummer or a drum set you can still create drum tracks using a programmable drum machine. The Roland TR-808 drum machine made its debut in 1980 and was one of the first widely used machines of it's kind. Acts like 'Planet Rock' and 'Afrika Bambaataa' quickly adopted the machine, completely replacing the "real" drummer. Marvin Gaye's famous track "Sexual Healing" features the 808.

To program the 808, the user selects "steps" represented by light-up buttons where the desired drum "hits" should fall. The machine then plays the pattern back with absolute precision. This precision combined with the chunky sound of the now famous "808-kick" made the 808 one of the most influential pieces of equipment in the development of most of our modern music styles.

Used 808's sell for upwards of $1,000 (USD) on Ebay. Lucky for us, Reason's Redrum does everything the 808 did and more for a fraction of the price.
