Mastering Process: (1) Normalization

This series of articles will guide you through the process of mastering your mixes. You will be working only on the final stage of the production, meaning the 'Mastering Stage'. Mastering a mix means to optimize the sound of the stereo mix for CD replication. Several steps are involved in this process:

(1) Normalization

(2) Compression / Multi-band compression

(3) Equalization

(4) Limiting

(5) Re-balancing of the Stereo Image (this step is not always needed)

Make sure you are familiar with these terms and what they do. In the next few steps you will apply these effects to your stereo mix.

Normalize, and clean up, the track

1) Name the track regions.

(In this article, I am dealing with 'Normalize' in Pro Tools. See the Figure 1 above.)

2) 'Normalize' the stereo mix.

(This is a crucial step, you have to normalize the mix otherwise your mastered product might not sound as "hot" as it could. When normalizing, make sure that you choose the options "Use in Playlist" and "Peak" as shown in Figure 1.)

3) 'Group' the two stereo tracks and 'Pan' them left and right so they are in stereo.

4) Name the group 'Mix 1'.

5) Clean up the 'dead air' in the front and at the end of the song.

(The best way to do this is to hit the 'all' group and select all the tracks at once. Monitor the selected region to be removed to make sure you do not remove any wanted material.)

6) Mix the song until you have a good rough mix.
