Even though in this particular case a compressor is not essential, by using it, you are able to bring a little bit more separation between the instruments of the band.

 

 

1) Insert a Stereo Compressor into the MASTER channel of the Mix window and apply the settings shown in Figure 1.

(In this article, I am dealing with Pro Tools. See the Figure 1 below.)

2) Listen carefully to the changes occuring to the mix when the compressor is inserted.

Use the Bypass button to listen to the difference between the compressed and un-compressed mix. Remember, the compression should be very gentle. You should feel the difference but not hear any artifacts caused by the compressor. A good way to start is to begin with very light settings especially in the Ratio and Threshold parameters, and move on from there to more drastic settings.

 

  

Don't look for it, there is no "Perfect Setting"

 

Stereo compression settings can change drastically depending on the type of music you are dealing with. There is no such a thing as "The perfect settings for every situation". Let your ears and instincts guide you through this crucial stage.
