Psychological Characteristics of Sound: (5) Location of Sound

The location of sound (Sound Localization) is a very important characteristic in psychoacoustics, and virtually all sounds contain information about the location. Historically, ensembles of different instruments were played at different locations each other, and composers placed their instruments in different locations in their orchestra music, changing the psychological response of the audience to the location of the sound. With the advent of the era of stereo recording, these historical practices became important in the recording of live music. (However, these were largely ignored in recording studios due to rapid development of recording equipments.)

On the other hand, a moving sound is not easy to reproduce in case of music playing by instruments. A moving sound is usually accompanied by a Doppler phenomenonThe Doppler effect is that the pitch of the moving sound changes depending on the strength of the sound and the position between the sound source and the listener. This effect can have a psychological effect on the listener with respect to the pitch of music.
