About 'Aural Exciter'

Aural Exciter (aka Exciter) was first developed by a company named "Aphex". At the core of this circuit is a multi-band equalizer that boosts gain dependent on the level of the input signal. This means that the "sound" of the equalization will change from one instance to the next depending not on the setting of the center frequency or Q or gain, but on the level of the signal in that frequency range.

Aural Exciter increases the spaciousness of a sound not by adding treble, but by other means such as summing a controlled amount of distortion in with the original signal or adaptive EQ. Aural Exciter produces a brighter sound without necessarily adding stridency. Aural Exciters are particularly effective on vocals that are easily masked by musical instruments sounds, enhancing the clarity of vocal sounds.

Most of these Aural Exciter devices can be thought of as modified high-frequency shelving equalizers that may intentionally manipulate with the phase response of the signal, to cause a psycho acoustic response. Aural Exciter creates a new overtone that does not exist in the original sound, making the tone of the original sound stronger and cleaner. For this reason, aural exciters are also called 'Enhancer'.
