Comparing The Effects of Reverb

Most songs can benefit from added reverb, so choose a song you like for the following tasks:

1) Compare and contrast the different reverb types

Select and audition the four different types of reverb available in your reverb unit. (see below) You may wish to use a snare track to do this, as its transient nature will make the differences in the reverb settings more obvious. Write down your impressions below, paying close attention to decay lengths, tone, and pre-delay settings.

  • Stage: ____________________
  • Room: ____________________
  • Hall: ____________________

2) Set up a wide, dark reverb

By using the decay and low-pass filter controls, dial in a reverb setting that sounds lush, but not overly bright. "Bright" is a term used to describe the presence of treble — if a sound is bright, it has a lot of treble information. If it is "Dark", it lacks those high frequencies. "Wide" is a term to describe expansive reverb sound, usually achieved with long decay (or early reflection) settings.

3) Set up a deep, bright reverb

Using the same controls, set up a longer reverb that has much more high frequency content.
