Analog Tape
Analog tape - Tape is 1.5 mili thick (1 mili = 0.1 centimeters) and has 3 layers: 1) Base = A mylar polyester ribbon: 0.5 mili 2) 'A' face = Iron oxide in a binder (glue): 0.5 milli (oxide side is shinny, backside is dark) 3) 'B' face = A carbon based - to help machine to grip the tape: 0.5 milli
- Tape is on a 10 1/2" NAB Reel on 3" ID NAB hub - 2500 ft on 10 1/2" reel - At 30 Inches Per Second (IPS) = 16 min. recording / 15 IPS = 32 min. recording
- Size (Width) 1/4": mono (full track) 1/2": 4 track - 2 TR (stereo) 1": 8 track - 2 TR (stereo) 2": 16 track - 24 TR
*Analog recording process is Not a linear process - They use EQ curves where bass is cut & treble is boosted while recording - Bass is boosted & treble cut while playing back (reproducing)
- Analog tape Standards in the world: 1) NAB curve: in U.S. for 15 IPS (15 Inches Per Second) -> Boost bass & cut treble 2) CCIR / IEC curve: in Europe for 15 IPS 3) AES: World wide for 30 IPS
*Nano Weber per meter (nW/m) : Measurement of reference fluxivity
*Standard = .185 nW/m = .250 nW/m = +3 dB over standard = .370 nW/m = +6 over standard = .520 nW/m = +9 over standard
- Pancake: A reel of tape with no flanges around it ; All tapes are stored by play winding onto the take-up reel (Right-Hand side)
- Print through: Occurs when a signal from one layer of tape reproduces itself (prints) through to an adjacent layer. If stored tails out it will be a post-echo, if top out (improper) it will be a pre-echo.
