Analog Tape Machine Alignment (8)
(Continued from previous article)
*In this article, I am dealing with 'Studer A80', an industry standard analog tape machine during 1970-80s. Record Level Adjustment 1) Set up the signal generator to output a 1 kHz sine wave at a level of +4 dBv.
2) Put the machine into the record mode. To do this, press both "PLAY" and "RECORD" transport buttons at the same time.
3) Adjust the record level to read 0 VU. You do this with the tape machine in the record mode while monitoring the reproduce level. To do this, locate the Record Adjustment electronics. Now, find the control marked "RECORD LEVEL" for the speed at which you are recording. With your tweaker, turn the record level control until the VU meter reads 0 VU.
4) When you have successfully adjusted the record level to read 0 VU, stop the tape machine.
High Frequency Record Equalization 1) Set up the signal generator to output a 10 kHz sine wave at a level of +4 dBv.
2) Put the machine into the record mode. To do this, press both "PLAY" and "RECORD" buttons at the same time.
3) Adjust the high frequency record equalization level to read 0 VU. You do this with the tape machine in the record mode while monitoring the reproduce level. To do this, locate the Record Adjustment electronics. Now, find the control marked "HIGH FREQUENCY EQUALIZATION" for the speed at which you are recording. With your tweaker, turn the high frequency equalization control until the VU meter reads 0 VU.
4) When you have successfully adjusted the high frequency record equalization to read 0 VU, stop the tape machine.
Low Frequency Record Equalization
1) Set up the signal generator to output a 100 Hz sine wave at a level of +4 dBv.
2) Put the machine into the record mode. To do this, press both "PLAY" and "RECORD" buttons at the same time.
3) Adjust the low frequency reproduce equalization level to read 0 VU. You do this with the tape machine in the record mode while monitoring the reproduce head. To do this, locate the Reproduce Adjustment electronics. Now, find the contorl marked "LOW FREQUENCY EQUALIZATION" for the speed at which you are recording. With your tweaker, turn the low frequency equalization control until the VU meter reads 0 VU.
4) When you have successfully adjusted the low frequency reproduce equalization to read 0 VU, stop the tape machine.
