Delay (2)

Comb filter (looks like comb):

- In signal processing, a comb filter adds a slightly delayed version of a signal to itself, causing phase cancellations. It is similar to ring modulation. The frequency response of a comb filter consists of a series of regularly spaced spikes, so that it looks like a comb.

▲ Comb Filter:

Suggests two performance (Doubling, Cancellation)

Long delay:

- can be used to suggest a large environment

- ‘echo on the beat’ —> delays that coincide with a rhythm patterns

3 delay zones:

- Zone 1 (0.5 ~ 10 ms): ‘Interactive zone’. Causes “comb filtering”, which is phase agreement and disagreement

- Zone 2 (10 ~ 60 ms): ‘The doubling zone’. Cretes an artificial room or two performances

- Zone 3 (60 ~ beyond ms): ‘The echo zone’. Typically used to create an echo on the beat

Basic delay parameters:

1) Delay time (ms)

- Obviously delay time

2) Number of delays - how many delays you use:

- Pick a delay with a fixed amount (EG, delay, L, C, R)

- Use feedback (a.k.a. regeneration)

- Multi-tap (pick as many as you want)

3) Feedback

- Also called 'Regeneration'. Sends the delayed output back into the unit

4) EQ

- Filters for bass and treble

5) Location

- Where from in stereo

[side trip]

Phasing, flanging, chorusing ==> They are exactly same type of effects

; The only difference is 'delay time'
