Speakers (2)

Speaker quality/character

1) Damping factor

How quickly & accurately the speaker stops when the signal is removed

ex.1) In the case of kick drum —> if damping factor is not good, speaker would alter the kick drum sound, such as vibration or …

ex.2) If damping factor is too ‘high’ then alters the attack point (booming or ~)

2) Compliancy

How easily the speaker is set in motion

Big bass --> So much distortion in speaker

*Near field monitor:

- Because woofer is so small (6~8") by distance of motion reproduce bass —> need to move speaker to adjust distance

- In Near field monitoring —> Bass tends to be tight (tight bass) —> punchy

Check specifications with amplifier

Amplifier: ‘Slew rate’ —> A measure of how accurately the Amp. will ‘track’ a signal transient (when you buy an amplifier with passive speakers, you should do audition before buy it)

*Amplifier power

- Wattage

A) Work over time (current)

B) Heat capability

*Most powered speakers —> 'under power' ( to avoid clipping problems)

*Speakers are inefficient device

( Amp. can’t deliver 100w over time)

Most speakers —> 15 ~ 20% efficient

In general, it is best to over power the speaker

*2 things blow up speaker:

a) Over current (too much power)

b) Clipping (square wave) / Under power ( Amp. bring power) --> this is more common case

*Amps must work into a load (Impedance: Z)

- Its wattage rating is given for a specific load, Z

Ex) 100w @ 16Ω

200w @ 8Ω

400w @ 4Ω
