An engineer must have some idea of the frequency range he/she is looking for before actually making changes. This implies that the engineer should be familiar with what the frequency ranges will sound like. The way to gain this knowledge is to study (listen to) the various frequency ranges and what they do to a sound.

 

Trying to accurately describe a sound is one of the biggest communication problems you will encounter in the audio world. It is impossible to accurately define a sound in words. Describing a sound is an inexact skill at best. One person's "mellow" might be another person's "dull". What might be "too sharp" and unattractive to you, might be "cutting" and just right to someone else. There can be no right answer to describing a sound. 

 

You will set your equalizer to alter different areas of the sonic spectrum and listen to the effect of that change on the audio. You will write down your description of the sound. This helps focus your thoughts on the quality of the sounds.
