Equalizers (EQ)

 

* Equalizer:

- A frequency specific fader

- An electronic device that alters frequency response by increasing or decreasing the level of a signal at a specific portion of the frequency spectrum

 

 

Street version:

- A sound changer that can raise or lower bass, mids, and treble

 

 

Uses:

- Corrective EG (Envelope Generator)

- Reduce noises

- Tune speakers to a room

 

 

Creative uses:

- Special effects

- Musical enhancement

- Musical or dramatic effects

 

 

What does ‘EQ’ alter/change?:

- Tone (tonality)

- Timbre

 

 

Other ways to EQ-ing:

- Microphone selection

- Microphone placement

- The environment

- Instrument selection (choice)

- Instrument setup (e.g. drum heads, guitar strings)

- How you play it

 

 

Parameters:

1) Frequency (Hz): “What area of the sound do I want to work on?”

2) Amplitude (dB): “Do I want to make that area louder or softer?”

3) Width (dB/Octave): “Do I want to EQ’ing wide area or narrow area?”

a.k.a. bandwidth, slope, and Q

 

 

Two ways to ‘boost’ (increase) or ‘cut’ (decrease) level with EQ:

1) Peak: You EQ “You and the neighbor’s next door”

2) Shelf:

- [with bass] You EQ “You and everybody down the block”

- [with treble] You EQ “You and everybody up the block”
