Keith Emerson

*See all of the patch cables behind him. In the past, you had to change them all if you wanted a different sound. This is why we call synthesizer sounds "Patches".

Exploring Synthesis (1)

A "sound designer" is a person who does just that, designs sounds. A sound designer might be creating special effects for a space movie, a car commercial or creating a keyboard patch for use on a music production. The tools of the sound designer consist of: audio recorders and editors, synthesizers, samplers and libraries of stock sounds. If you want to be a sound designer, you should first practice for creating your own synth patch using your synthesizers. What's important here is that you learn how the sound changes as you manipulate the parameters of the synthesizer. The individual steps are nothing you should be in a hurry to get through. Take your time. Push each parameter to the extreme ends of their values to hear how the sound changes before settling on the final value you wish. Keep playing notes as you change every slider and knob. The entire point of this action is for you to hear the changes as you make them.
