Drums Settings for Recording (1):

Kick Drum

 

1. EQ chart for Kick Drum recording

Frequency Range Characteristics
Below 40 Hz

Bottom

*Cut this area of frequency using High Pass filter if you don't want rumble low-end resonance

60 - 100 Hz

Power

*Boost this area of frequency if you need to add power to kick drum sounds

200 - 250 Hz

Body

*Boost this area of frequency if you want full body of kick drum sounds (Fatness)

*Cut this area of frequency if you want clarity of kick drum sounds

(*Check if the kick drum sounds overlap with bass guitar sound in this area of frequency)

2 - 5 kHz 

Attack

*Boost this area of frequency if you want attack sounds of kick drum or beater noise

5 - 8 kHz

Click

*Boost this area of frequency if you need click sounds of kick drum

 

 

 

 

2. Compression settings for Kick Drum recording

Parameters Characteristics
Attack time

5 ~ 10 ms

*Slow attack times may kill the initial impact of kick drum sounds before the kick drum sounds are compressed

*Fast attack times may kill the transient of the kick drum sounds so make the sounds dull

Release time

250 ms

*It depends on Tempo. The tempo is slower, the release time is longer (vice versa).

Ratio

3:1 ~ 4:1

*You can adjust ratio setting depend on the dynamics of the song

(More dynamics, higher ratio / Vice versa)

Threshold

Low ( - 20 dB ~ )

*You can lower threshold level if you want more compressed kick drum sounds
