Keep Fresh Ears To Do Better Music Mix

 

Most mix engieers will tell you that they never nail the perfect mix the first time out of the box. In fact, depending on the complexity of the material it can take anywhere from a few hours to days or weeks to get a mix to the point where all concerned think it's finished. One reason for the length of time is due to ear fatigue. It simply is a problem for people to keep open, fresh ears after hearing something over and over in a short period time. And it's a subtle thing. You maynot be able to tell that the lyrics are getting burried in the mix simply because you already havethen memorized and are not really hearing them any more. Or perhaps it is just too late in the day (or early in the morning) for you to hear critically.

 

These things happen to us all. So to avoid making mistake most engineers and producers will take a mix to some point of satisfaction, then put it (and themselves) to bed and listen to it again at a later time, after they have had a chance to "forget" it. Then they will work on it again with fresh ears and energy.

 

So, we are giving you a chance to do a mix a second time on a song you already know. This will give you the opportunity to refine and improve your work. Perhaps you have a different take on how the reverb should be used, or maybe you didn't quite find that right EQ for the vocals. Whatever. Now is your chance to have another crack at it.
