Drums Settings for Recording (4):

Cymbals

 

1. EQ chart for Cymbals recording

Frequency Range Characteristics
Below 200 Hz

Mic bleed noises

*Cut this area of frequency using High Pass Filter to eliminate microphone bleed noises from snare and toms.

500 - 1 kHz

Cymbal's Clang (Harsh metallic sounds)

*Cut this area of frequency to eliminate clang from cymbals

2 kHz - 3 kHz

Presence

*Boost this area of frequency if you want to add some presence of cymbals' sounds

8 kHz -      

Brightness

*Boost this area of frequency using High Pass Filter if you want bright metallic sounds of cymbals

 

 

 

 

2. Compression settings for Cymbals recording

Parameters Characteristics
Attack time

Slow

*Faster attack times may kill the transient of cymbal sound so make the sound dull

Release time

200 ms

*It depends on Tempo. The tempo is slower, the release time is longer (vice versa).

Ratio

2:1

*You can adjust ratio setting depend on the dynamics of the music

(More dynamics, higher ratio / Vice versa)

Threshold

- 5 dB ~ 

*You can lower threshold level if you want more compressed sounds. (In this case, you'll lose dynamics of cymbal sounds)
