Microphone Specifications (2)

▲ Microphone Frequency Response (20 ~ 20,000 Hz @ +/- 3dB)

© The Music Telegraph

4. Frequency Response (at +/- 3dB)

20 Hz ~ 20 kHz: Excellent Mic

40 Hz ~ 18 kHz: Very good Mic

50 Hz ~ 15 kHz: Good Mic

80 Hz ~ 13 kHz: Very good Mic for speaking voices

120 Hz ~ 5 kHz: For Harmonica

5. Maximum dB SPL (Sound Pressure Level) Handling Capacity (For 3% THD)

150 dB or more = Excellent

140 dB = Very good

120 dB = Good

6. Impedance (Z) in Ohms (Ω)

- Professional Microphone has 'Lo Z'

: 50 Ω (up to 4000 ft of cable run) to 250 Ω (up to 1000 ft of cable run)

- Semi-Professional (Consumer) Microphone has 'Hi Z'

: 25 kΩ and up

*To prevent a microphone from losing High Frequencies, try not to exceed 25 ft in cable length

7. Sensitivity

- Microphone electrical output

- Usually measured in millivolts per pascal (mV/Pa)

- Uses a 94dB SPL (= 1 Pa) signal at a 1 foot distance

- Also listed in dBm, dynes/cm2, or MicroBars

*Here In After, For 'Condenser Mics' only*

8. Inherent Noises

- Equivalent noise level

- Self-noise

20 dB or less = Excellent

30 dB = Good

40 dB = Fair

9. S/N (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)

70dB or Better = Excellent

65 dB = Very Good

60 dB = Good

10. Bass Roll-off switch

- A Hi-Pass Filter

11. Attenuation PAD

- Reducing level to avoid overload distortion to the Mic Pre-Amps
